Abstract

English

The author, a native of Handan, first developed a curiosity about the City God (Chenghuang) from childhood memories of the Chenghuang Temple near his home—such as the bustling scenes on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, and the ritual of burning paper effigies during the deity’s birthday celebration.

During middle school, he became fascinated with mythology and encountered the concept of the “unity of the Three Teachings” (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism), which allowed him to understand why different deities were worshipped together in local religious spaces.

As an adult, he visited the temple intentionally, only to discover that the figure worshipped there—“Master Jiang” (Jiang Kexiao)—was not the actual City God. The true name of Handan’s City God is not recorded in local gazetteers, and related stone inscriptions remain buried underground.

All he could document was the placement of five statues within the temple and the coexistence of multiple deities. From this, the idea emerged to create a story of his own for the City God of Handan.
