Rituals and Transmission|

Focus: Ritual, Transmission, and Practice

Three Teachings Studies: Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism (TTS) welcomes contributions that explore how teachings are enacted, transmitted, and sustained through ritual performance, institutional mechanisms, and textual traditions across the Three Teachings.

Ritual practice serves as both vessel and crucible: a medium of continuity and a site of transformation. From ancestral rites and ordinations to talismanic acts, seasonal offerings, and structured transmissions, we seek studies that illuminate the embodied expressions of tradition in classical and contemporary contexts.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Structural logic, symbolic language, and performative aesthetics of rituals
  • Doctrinal, social, and political dimensions of transmission lineages (famai, chuanfa, shicheng)
  • Ritual manuals, liturgies, and their relationship to lived practice
  • Points of convergence and divergence among Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist ritual forms
  • Localized innovations and vernacular ritual systems
  • Ritual as a vehicle for ethical cultivation and cosmological expression

We welcome interdisciplinary approaches—textual analysis, historical inquiry, ethnography, and fieldwork—emphasizing ritual as a historically situated, culturally dynamic mode of transmission and transformation.
