Sounding the Teachings|

Focus: Sound, Music, and Voice

Three Teachings Studies: Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism (TTS) invites contributions that examine the sonic dimensions of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism—how sound functions as a medium of religious expression, ritual efficacy, doctrinal transmission, and cultural memory.

Far from mere ornament, sound becomes a transformative vehicle: through chant and incantation, sacred music, ritual acoustics, voice and breath, it shapes the experience and embodiment of the Three Teachings in vivid and embodied ways.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Chanting traditions (e.g., Buddhist fanbai, Daoist zhuan jing, Confucian sacrificial hymns)
  • Ritual soundscapes: temple acoustics, processional sounds, symbolic resonances
  • Liturgical music theory, notation systems, and transmission
  • Comparative studies of musical aesthetics and sonic philosophies among the Three Teachings
  • Voice, breath, and rhythm in meditative and performative practice
  • Sound in pedagogy, healing, cosmology, or apotropaic applications
  • Cross-regional fusions and temporal evolution of Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist sound practices

Submissions may engage historical, ethnographic, textual, or musicological approaches. We encourage interdisciplinary work that allows us to hear the teachings anew—treating sound as both subject and method of inquiry.
