Abstract
Deutsch

Beethoven’s so-called “heroic style” marks a pivotal aesthetic and compositional shift in his middle period, shaped by personal crisis and the ideological upheavals of his time. This study offers a multidimensional examination of the heroic style: its biographical and philosophical origins, its core musical features—including motivic development, contrast aesthetics, and formal expansion—and its interpretation by key musicologists such as Adorno, Dahlhaus, Burnham, and Solomon. The paper also explores Beethoven’s influence on Romantic successors like Liszt, Chopin, and Brahms, as well as the role his music plays in shaping a modern sense of musical historicity. Rather than a fixed concept, the heroic paradigm emerges as a dynamic and evolving construct that encompasses revolutionary grandeur, psychological struggle, and contemplative lyricism. The conclusion reflects on the continued relevance of Beethoven’s heroic style for contemporary interpretive and performance practices, and its implications for a critical understanding of Western musical tradition.
