AMA Citation Style

Reference Style Guide

Health Nexus follows the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style, 11th edition for all references. Authors are responsible for ensuring accuracy and consistency.

1. General Principles

  • References are numbered in the order they appear in the text, using superscript Arabic numerals.
  • Each reference number is used only once; repeated citations use the same number.
  • List references numerically at the end of the manuscript.
  • Abbreviate journal names according to National Library of Medicine (NLM) guidelines (PubMed Journals Database).

2. Journal Article

Format:

Author(s). Article title. Abbreviated Journal Name. Year;Volume(Issue):Page numbers. doi:DOI

Example:

Smith AB, Lee C, Zhao W. Integrative approaches in hypertension management: A randomized controlled trial. J Integr Med. 2023;21(5):321-330. doi:10.1016/j.joim.2023.05.007

3. Book

Format:

Author(s). Book Title. Edition number (if not first). Publisher; Year.

Example:

Murray PR, Rosenthal KS, Pfaller MA. Medical Microbiology. 9th ed. Elsevier; 2020.

4. Book Chapter

Format:

Author(s) of chapter. Chapter title. In: Editor(s), ed(s). Book Title. Edition number. Publisher; Year:Page numbers.

Example:

Wang J, Chen H. Herbal pharmacology in cardiovascular disease. In: Li X, Zhang Y, eds. Advances in Traditional Chinese Medicine. 2nd ed. Springer; 2022:45-68.

5. Website

Format:

Author(s) (if available). Title of web page. Name of Website. Published date. Updated date. Accessed date. URL

6. Conference Abstract

Format:

Author(s). Title of abstract. Journal Name. Year;Volume(Suppl issue):Page number. doi:DOI

7. Figures and Tables Citation in Text

When citing figures/tables from other works, permission must be obtained, and the source cited in AMA style in the legend.

Quick Tips for Authors

  • Use no periods in abbreviated journal titles.
  • List up to 6 authors; if more, list the first 3 followed by et al.
  • Ensure all URLs are active and include the accessed date.
  • Always include the DOI if available.
