Author Guidelines

Comparative Philosophy and Religious Traditions (CPRT) welcomes original scholarly submissions that contribute to intercultural philosophical inquiry and the comparative study of religious traditions.

Authors are requested to read the following guidelines carefully before submission.

1. Scope and Suitability

Manuscripts must align with the journal’s Aims & Scope and demonstrate:

  • Original scholarly contribution
  • Clear comparative framework
  • Conceptual rigor
  • Engagement with relevant international scholarship
  • Methodological clarity

Submissions outside the journal’s scope may be declined at the editorial screening stage.

2. Article Types

CPRT publishes the following categories:

  • Research Articles: 8,000–12,000 words (including footnotes and bibliography)
  • Comparative Text Studies: 6,000–10,000 words
  • Dialogue Forum Contributions: 4,000–8,000 words
  • Critical Review Essays: 3,000–6,000 words
  • Book Reviews: 1,000–2,500 words

Word limits may be adjusted at editorial discretion.

3. Submission Requirements

Submissions must include:

  • Anonymous manuscript file (for double-blind review)
  • Separate title page with author name(s), affiliation(s), and ORCID (if available)
  • Abstract (150–250 words)
  • 4–6 keywords
  • Complete bibliography

Simultaneous submissions are not permitted.

4. Manuscript Preparation

4.1 Language

Manuscripts must be written in clear academic English. Authors are responsible for language accuracy prior to submission.

4.2 Formatting

  • 12-point font
  • Double-spaced
  • Page numbers included
  • Clear heading hierarchy

5. Citation and Reference Style

CPRT strictly adheres to the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition), Notes and Bibliography system.

Manuscripts that do not conform to Chicago style may be returned for revision prior to peer review.

5.1 Footnotes

  • Use footnotes (not endnotes).
  • Number notes consecutively.
  • Provide full citation at first reference.
  • Use shortened form in subsequent citations.

5.2 Bibliography

A complete bibliography must appear at the end of the manuscript.

  • Entries arranged alphabetically by author surname
  • Include DOI where available
  • Ensure full and accurate publication details

5.3 Citation Examples

Book

First note:

John Smith, Philosophy and Religious Dialogue (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2020), 45.

Bibliography:

Smith, John. Philosophy and Religious Dialogue. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2020.

Journal Article

5.4 Classical and Religious Texts

For widely recognized classical works (e.g., Plato, Aristotle, Confucius, Aquinas, Buddhist sutras, Islamic philosophical texts), standard scholarly citation conventions may be used where appropriate.

Authors should:

  • Specify edition and translation used
  • Indicate book/chapter/section numbers when applicable
  • Provide original-language titles where relevant

Consistency is required throughout the manuscript.

6. Abstract and Keywords

Each manuscript must include:

  • 150–250 word abstract
  • 4–6 keywords

Keywords should reflect the article’s comparative and thematic focus.

7. Ethical Compliance

Authors must comply with the journal’s Publication Ethics policy.

Authors must:

  • Ensure originality
  • Avoid plagiarism and redundant publication
  • Disclose conflicts of interest
  • Confirm the manuscript is not under review elsewhere

Where applicable, ethical approval for research involving human participants must be documented.

8. Use of Artificial Intelligence

If AI tools (including large language models) are used in manuscript preparation, authors must disclose their use in a dedicated statement.

AI tools may not be listed as authors. Authors remain fully responsible for the content and accuracy of their work.

9. Peer Review Process

All submissions undergo double-blind peer review.

  • Initial screening: 7–10 days
  • External review: 4–6 weeks
  • Average time to first decision: 6–8 weeks
  • Average time to final decision: 8–12 weeks

10. Article Processing Charges (APC)

CPRT may charge an Article Processing Charge to support editorial management and production.

  • No submission fee
  • APC information is transparently stated on the journal website
  • Waivers or discounts may be available

11. Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright.

All published articles are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0).

12. Post-Acceptance Process

After acceptance:

  • Manuscripts undergo copyediting
  • Authors review page proofs
  • Articles are published Online First
  • Articles are assigned to the June or December issue

13. Appeals

Authors may appeal editorial decisions by submitting a reasoned written request to the Editorial Office.

Appeals are reviewed independently.
