AI & Research Integrity Policy
Comparative Philosophy and Religious Traditions (CPRT) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of research integrity in an evolving technological landscape.
The journal recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including large language models (LLMs), may assist researchers in certain aspects of scholarly work. At the same time, the journal affirms that authors bear full responsibility for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of their research.
1. Authorship and Accountability
AI tools, including generative AI systems, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.
Authorship implies:
- Intellectual responsibility
- Accountability for content
- Ability to respond to scholarly critique
- Responsibility for ethical compliance
These responsibilities can only be assumed by human authors. All listed authors are fully responsible for the entire content of the manuscript, including any portions assisted by AI tools.
2. Permitted Uses of AI
Authors may use AI tools for limited purposes such as:
- Language editing
- Grammar correction
- Structural suggestions
- Summarizing publicly available information
- Generating preliminary outlines
Such use must not replace:
- Original intellectual contribution
- Conceptual analysis
- Comparative argumentation
- Independent scholarly judgment
AI tools must not generate substantive philosophical arguments or original research claims without critical human evaluation and revision.
3. Mandatory Disclosure
If AI tools are used in manuscript preparation, authors must disclose this in a dedicated statement at the time of submission.
Example disclosure:
"The authors used AI-assisted tools for language refinement and editorial support. All intellectual content and final revisions were performed and verified by the authors."
Failure to disclose material AI involvement may be considered a breach of research integrity.
4. Prohibited Practices
The following practices are strictly prohibited:
- Listing AI tools as authors
- Submitting AI-generated manuscripts without substantial human oversight
- Fabrication of citations or sources generated by AI
- Use of AI to manipulate peer review
- Plagiarism through AI-assisted paraphrasing
Any such practices may result in rejection, retraction, or further ethical investigation.
5. Accuracy and Verification
Authors are responsible for verifying:
- The accuracy of all citations
- The authenticity of referenced works
- The validity of factual claims
- The coherence and originality of arguments
AI tools may generate inaccurate or fabricated references. Authors must independently verify all sources prior to submission.
6. Research Integrity in Humanities Scholarship
In fields such as comparative philosophy and religious traditions, intellectual integrity requires:
- Careful textual interpretation
- Accurate representation of philosophical traditions
- Cultural and historical sensitivity
- Transparent methodological reasoning
The use of AI must not undermine these scholarly standards.
7. Editorial Oversight
The editorial team reserves the right to:
- Request clarification regarding AI use
- Investigate suspected misuse
- Apply corrective measures where necessary
Concerns regarding AI misuse will be handled in accordance with the journal’s Publication Ethics policy.
8. Commitment to Responsible Innovation
CPRT supports responsible and transparent engagement with emerging technologies. The journal encourages scholars to explore the philosophical and ethical implications of AI while upholding rigorous academic standards.
Technological tools must serve scholarship — not replace it.
